Why so many solo developers?

The Reddit report mentioned above shows that a whopping 76% of respondents are working on their current project solo. This comes as a surprise to me, as I didn't expect there to be so many independent developers out there working alone.

There are several advantages to working alone as a developer. First, it can be cheaper and easier to work by yourself than to try and put together and manage a team. Second, you can stay more focused and get work done faster when there is no one else around to distract or slow you down. Third, you have complete control over your project when you work alone--which can be important for creative or technical reasons. And finally, some people simply enjoy the challenge of working independently and being in complete control of their own work.

On the other hand, working by yourself can also be isolating and lonely. You also have to wear all the hats--project manager, designer, programmer, etc.--which can be daunting and overwhelming. And if you're not careful, it's easy to burn yourself out when you're the only one responsible for everything.

So what do you think? Are the pros or cons of working alone more significant? Or is it different for everyone? And more importantly: why do you work alone (if you do)?
